These terms apply to Podyglot, the iPhone app for understanding spoken French, and to the Podyglot service it talks to. By downloading or using Podyglot you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the app. How we handle your information is in the Privacy Policy.
1. Licence
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use Podyglot on Apple devices that you own or control, as permitted by Apple's Standard End User License Agreement, which is part of these terms. Where these terms and Apple's agreement differ, the stronger protection for you applies. The app is licensed to you, not sold.
2. Subscriptions and free trials
What you can use for free. You can start the course without a subscription. A subscription unlocks the rest of the app.
Who sells it. Podyglot Premium is an auto-renewing monthly subscription sold by Apple through the App Store. Apple takes the payment and keeps your payment details. We never see them.
Prices. The standard price and the lower circle price (section 3) are shown in the app and on the App Store before you buy, in your own currency. The price includes any sales tax Apple charges.
Free trial. New subscribers can start with a free trial, once per Apple Account. It turns into a paid subscription at the end unless you cancel at least 24 hours before it ends.
Renewal. The subscription renews each month at the price of your plan unless you turn off auto-renew at least 24 hours before the end of the period. Apple charges your Apple Account within the 24 hours before each renewal.
Managing and cancelling. In the Settings app, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Cancelling stops the next renewal; you keep access until the end of the period you have paid for.
Refunds are handled by Apple under its own terms (reportaproblem.apple.com). We cannot give refunds ourselves.
Family Sharing. If the person who pays has Family Sharing turned on, the members of their Apple family group can use the subscription too.
3. Invites, circles, gift tokens and free periods
These features have rules, set out in the app where you use them. In short:
Invites. An invite is a one-use code for one friend. It expires after three days. A household can have its free month from an invite once, ever.
Circles. The circle price applies while someone in another household in your circle is paying. If your circle stops qualifying, the app tells you and asks you to switch to the standard price or invite friends. Apple never changes your price by itself.
Gift tokens and certificates. Gift tokens are earned by paying and learning, and can be given to other learners. Five received tokens make a certificate for a free month. Tokens and certificates have no cash value, cannot be sold or exchanged outside Podyglot, and expire after the time the app shows.
Codes from the Podyglot team (for testers, teachers and others) give the free period they say, on the terms we gave them out on.
Free periods from any of these are given by Apple as offers on your subscription, under Apple's terms.
We may cancel an invite, code, token or free period that was obtained or used against these terms.
4. Podyglot names, classes and family boards
Your Podyglot name (your avatar) is chosen from word lists and a number. It is the only name other learners see, and it is never given to anyone else.
Classes. A teacher with a teacher code can set up a class, and pupils ask to join it. Teachers who use Podyglot with a class are responsible for doing so under their school's own rules.
Family boards. The person who pays can open a family board and let people join it. Everyone on a board sees each member's Podyglot name, level and a summary of their progress. Anyone can leave at any time. Being on a board does not share a subscription.
5. Acceptable use
Please do not:
copy, modify, reverse-engineer, resell or redistribute the app or its content,
sell, trade or publish invites, codes, gift tokens or certificates, or use more than one account to get free periods you would not otherwise have,
guess codes, send automated requests, or try to get round the app's device check or its limits,
interfere with the app's or the service's normal operation, or
use Podyglot to break the law.
If an account breaks these rules, we may stop it from sending, claiming or giving invites, codes and gift tokens, for a while or for good. Your own subscription and your learning are not affected by that.
6. Content and intellectual property
All content in Podyglot, including its lessons, audio, text, artwork, code and the name Podyglot, is owned by BaseCodex or its licensors and is protected by copyright and other laws. You may use it only within the app, for your own personal, non-commercial learning. New listening content is downloaded each day and may change or be withdrawn.
7. Exams
Podyglot includes a GCSE French listening course written for the CCEA specification. It is made by BaseCodex, not by CCEA or any other exam board, and it does not guarantee any exam result.
8. Children
Podyglot is for learners aged 13 and over. Younger children may use it only with a parent's or teacher's help. A parent or guardian who lets a child use Podyglot agrees to these terms for them.
9. Disclaimer
Podyglot is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind to the fullest extent permitted by law. We do not guarantee it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or fit for any particular purpose. Your access continues while you are offline, but some features need the service to be reachable.
10. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, BaseCodex is not liable for any indirect, incidental or consequential damages arising from your use of Podyglot. Nothing in these terms limits any rights you have as a consumer that cannot be excluded under the law that applies to you.
11. Changes
We may update these terms from time to time. The current version is always on this page, with the "Last updated" date above. If a change matters to you, we will also tell you in the app before it takes effect. Using Podyglot after a change means you accept the updated terms.
